I started educating myself on SEO to promote my own site. I have learned a lot and got my site on page one for many keywords. I am now asked to help others and might pursue some contract work in SEO. Thanks for the helpful resource.

Good tips, especially the bit about conferences and becoming a google qualified individual.... For the latter-- most would be surprised how fast you can spend 1,000 dollars in adwords. I just recently started and once companies see the increased traffic they get from a ppc campaign they're more and more comfortable jumping that virtual hurdle and throwing more and more money at internet marketing.

There is also a certification program for Yahoo! called "Ambassador." I would get the Google certification first. Good luck!
